2013 Death Valley Natural History Conference

Save the Date!

The Death Valley Natural History Association in partnership with the National Park Service is pleased to announce:

The 1st Death Valley Natural History Conference will be held November 15-17, 2013

Location: Furnace Creek Visitor Center Auditorium

Death Valley researchers will give presentations in their area of expertise. Selected presenters will have their paper published in the conference proceedings made available the year following the conference. Opportunities to present posters and answer questions will also be given.  Sunday will be set aside for Death Valley natural history field trips.  Field trip locations and leaders to be announced at a later date.

Abstract Submission Deadline was January 30, 2013.

We received 50 abstract submissions and oral and poster presenters have been selected. If you were one of the many fine applicants who've submitted your research- your acceptance letter was mailed out the first week of March.  If you have not received your notification please be in contact with the event coordinator, Geneil White by phone at 775-537-0787 ext. 208 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Once we have received all the pesenter regisrtation forms back we'll post a tentative presentation schedule for your review. Deadline: June 15, 2013.

The deadline to apply for a scholarship was April 30, 2013.  The Death Valley Natural History Conference Committee has awarded three graduate/undergraduate students waiver of their presenter/publiction fee.  Congratulations to:

  • Elaine Chow - studies Ecology at the University of California Davis.

  • Benjaman Gordon - currently earning his MS in Environmental Science at Christopher Newport University, VA.

  • Lydia Tarhan - a Geoscience PH. D. student at University of California Riverside. She's specializing in paleobiology.

General attendee registration will be available online at a later date.

LODGING

We encourage everyone to start making plans for your trip since November is a very busy season in Death Valley.    

We have negotiated a special rate with Xanterra for the conference.  They have set aside a block of rooms at the Furnace Creek Ranch for Thursday November 14th with check out on Sunday the 17th.

Rate: $130 per night +12% tax & $12 Resort Fee
To make a reservation please call (760) 786-2345 and ask for booking #593450.

Reservations must be made prior to 10/14/2013 and they will be asking for a deposit amount of $159.04 per room.  Check-In time is 4:00 PM and check out is 12:00 noon.  The resort also has a 48 hour individual cancellation policy.

Other options are to stay at Stove Pipe Wells, camp, or stay outside the park.

Reservations must be made for Furnace Creek Campground (has some full RV Hookups) and can be made 6 months in advance. All other campgrounds are on a fist come first serve basis.

Campground Reservations:
Reservations for the Furnace Creek Campground and group sites are now available by calling 1-877-444-6777 or by going online at http://www.recreation.gov.  Please note that there are proposed changes to campsite fees that may go into effect later this year.


The Furnace Creek Ranch also has RV spaces (760) 786-2345.
Stovepipe Wells Village has rooms and RV spaces (760) 786-2387.

Options outside the park include:
The Amargosa Opera House & Hotel at Death Valley Junction, (760) 852-4441 (1/2 hr away).
Hotels are also available in Beatty, NV (1 hr away) or Pahrump, NV (1 hr away).
 

Annual Scotty's Castle Organ Concert

The Welte-Mignon Organ at Scotty's Castle is played by human hands only once a year, for the annual Scotty's Castle Organ Concert.

This year's concert dates are June 21 and 22, 2013 featuring concert organist:

Ty Woodward.
